As bridal hair and make-up artists, we come across a variety of brides. Some regularly style their own hair and do their own make-up and might be looking for something a bit special for their big day but are wondering what a stylist can do that they can’t. Then there are the brides who don’t wear a lot of make-up or do their hair who want to know that they are going to be in safe hands.
So we’re here to let you know how to get the most out of your stylist and ensure that the money you spend really makes you feel a million dollars.
Meet Nadia Wyatt (left) who says she ‘loves making the bride feel beautiful and the best version of herself she's ever seen’, and describes herself as a ‘sucker for weddings’. ‘I love seeing the bride with all her girl gang and the closeness and excitement they’re all feeling’ - Nadia Book Nadia for your wedding hair and/or make-up now.
Meet Claire Reed, a Betty Lou stylist who enjoys
‘giving women confidence by making them look their absolute best on their wedding day.’ Book Claire for your wedding hair and/or make-up now.
We spoke to them both and here are some of their top tips to help you understand the bridal hair and make-up role and how to get the most out of your booking. But also, their general advice on planning and what they’ve loved most about the weddings they’ve worked on:
What is your No.1 wedding planning tip for couples?
Nadia Says: Pick 3 elements of the wedding that are most important to you and you just can't or won't compromise on, and then anything else you will. That way if you start to run out of budget as you're planning, you've already picked your key important elements, and the rest you're happy to amend or go without!
Claire Says: No. 1 tip: DON’T SWEAT THE TINY DETAILS! Enjoy it and don’t stress about the little things.
What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?
Claire Says: Flash mob to sing the Beatles ‘All you need is love’ after the meal. Without the bride and groom knowing, lyrics sheets were handed around the guests and everyone burst into song on cue. The bride and groom loved it!
Nadia Says: A bride wore a hair accessory that was her mum's when she got married, it was very special.
What is your No.1 beauty tip for a bride?
Nadia Says: Drink lots of water! The best way to flawless looking skin - is flawless skin! So start a good skincare regime in plenty of time for the big day.
Claire Says: it’s all about the basics - drink plenty of water, don’t smoke, exercise, don’t overdo it in the sun, don’t experiment with new products close to the wedding date. For instance, I had a bride wake up with her eye swollen shut the day after her wedding because of a new ‘miracle primer’ she’d bought online. Turns out it was designed to basically burn off a layer of skin revealing ‘glowing skin’ underneath!
Is a bride who has had a trial, able to change her mind about her hairstyle or make-up on the day of the wedding?
Claire Says: Yes the bride can change her mind on the day, but it’s always good to give as much of a heads-up as possible to the Make-up and/or Hair Stylist, to ensure timings are kept to.
Nadia Says: It's always best to do trials to ensure they're happy but if on the day they'd like a different lipstick colour or something then it's always fine. I'd recommend if a bride wasn't happy with her hair in the Trial and wanted something completely different to have another one to ensure both parties were confident that the look on the day would be exactly what she wanted.
Bride’s are often overwhelmed on the day. No surprise after all that work planning. How do you keep the bride feeling calm on her wedding day?
Nadia Says: I just speak calmly myself, and reiterate that everything is now the job of the ushers and bridesmaids to deal with and she's to delegate anything to someone else and she's to sit there with a glass of bucks fizz!
Claire Says: To keep feeling calm - keep your surroundings calm. A lot of bustle and people asking the bride questions can be very stressful!
What advice would you give to brides to stay looking great throughout their wedding day?
Claire Says: To stay looking great, use a setting spray (Urban Decay ‘All Nighter’ and Kryolan ‘Fixing Spray’ are both fab). Also, ensure you have some powder and top-up lipstick.
Nadia Says: When a make-up artist does your makeup and hair they will use longlasting products to keep it looking great. But oil blotting sheets are a good way to reduce shine throughout the day so always good to have a few sheets in your bridesmaid's handbag and have a top-up of lipstick.
How long does wedding hair and make-up take?
Nadia Says: I always ask for an hour for each and makeup so between 2/2.5hrs for completed hair and makeup.
Claire Says: I say to brides to allow up to 3 hours for their hair and makeup.
